PORT CLINTON, Ohio (AP) — Twenty people were rescued from an ice floe in Lake Erie, the Coast Guard said Monday. The Coast Guard's Ninth District Great Lakes station said it received a report about 10:20 a.m. that the people were stuck on a mile-long floe about a half-mile off Catawba Island State Park near Port Clinton in Ohio. A Coast Guard helicopter was sent from Air Station Detroit and two airboats headed to the scene from nearby Station Marblehead, said Petty Officer Jessica Fontenette. Rescuers from the Put-In-Bay fire department on South Bass Island and the Ottawa County sheriff's office also assisted. The Coast Guard was able to rescue nine people; four others were rescued by the other agencies; and seven were able to get to shore themselves on an airboat, she said.

After the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company flipped the switch on its sprawling new Avon Lake site in 1926, the brick behemoth, then one of the world’s largest coal-fired power plants, helped usher in a new era of regional economic growth in northeastern Ohio. Nearly a century later, the plant sits dismantled and disconnected. It was shut down in 2022, and just one of its six towering smokestacks remains. The nearly week-old United Auto Workers strike against Ford (F.N), General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI) is viewed as a signal of the strength of the U.S. labor movement that has garnered national support from Americans. The UAW members from two striking plants gathered in Toledo were rolling out for the one-hour, 45-mile (72 km) drive to Wayne, Michigan, where Ford workers also walked off the job last week. In Michigan, Ohio and Missouri, the three states where workers are currently striking, models made by the Big Three dominate the leaderboard of new auto registrations. The United States is still the second-largest car market in the world, trailing only China. Union membership has fallen steadily over several decades in the United States.

Was it as cool as playing tennis with Venus (if you can characterize my on-court performance relative to hers as “playing tennis”)? And I was amazed as we motored across the state, lock by lock through the Erie Canal, a waterway that I previously knew of only from middle school geography class. Yes, I’m a little obsessed with the Erie Canal — an outcome to reporting this story that I never anticipated. Because so much of my article about Geraldo Rivera needed to be about Geraldo Rivera, my cutting room floor is covered with details about the Canal. The purpose was to allow for the transport of goods and agriculture back and forth to the Midwest.

The Fairport Harbor West Lighthouse is located in Ohio and overlooks Lake Erie. The Fairport Harbor West Lighthouse in Ohio became available at auction and Consaul started bidding in 2009. Since buying the lighthouse, Consaul estimates she has spent over $300,000 renovating it. Sea lampreys, also known as "vampire fish," are a highly invasive species in the Great Lakes. The pandemic interrupted population management of the sea lampreys across the lakes.
